The 2008 High Fives program was launched in July with a dinner and presentation by leading motivational speaker, Mark Dobson. More than 90 Year 11 students representing Beaconhills College, St Margaret's School, Berwick Secondary College, St Francis Xavier College, Cranbourne Secondary College, Koo Wee Rup Secondary College and Eumemmerring College attended the event hosted by Monash Univesity Berwick and the South East Education Steering Committee.

The students enjoyed a delicious dinner before embarking on a fast and furious 'speed meeting' game where they asked one another the tough questions and got to know their new peers. Mark Dobson then inspired the participants to 'go boldly' and take risks in life and in the program.

The High Fives program brings together the brightest Year 11 students from the region to meet, network and experience learning in a university environment. Their critical thinking and problem solving skills are put to the test in a series of academic workshops presented by some of Monash University's leading lecturers.

No Trivial Pursuit: Trivia Buffs Put to the Test in a Show of Support for the Myanmar Tsunami and Sichuan Earthquake Victims

The Indian Ocean earthquake earlier this year caused devastating tsunamis to hit the Myanmar coast. Thousands of people were left homeless and more than 600 perished or went missing. Two Berwick campus students were directly affected by the Myanmar Tsunami.

The 2008 Sichuan earthqake in China left 70 000 people dead and 4.8 million homeless. Sichuan University has a close relationship with Monash University and is located in the centre of the earthquake zone.

The Berwick campus came together last month to raise money for disaster relief efforts in the Myanmar and Sichuan communities. 70 students, staff and friends of the university put their knowledge to the test with a fast-paced and highly entertaining night of trivia. The event was hosted by Monash Residential Service Berwick and Health, Wellbeing and Development with support from the campus and Meeting Point, who provided a delicious dinner for all participants.

The event was a great success with lots of heated debate, laughter, rivalry and more than $1000 donated to the relief funds. The top awards went to the teams from the Faculty of Business and Economics and MUBS who both won decadent and delicious chocolate hampers.
