Imagine a world where technology enables a sustainable future. This was the challenge set for participants in the 2008 Microsoft Imagine Cup. Regarded by many as the IT equivalent of Australian Idol, students are given a chance to showcase their talent and get a kick-start into the industry.

Berwick multimedia student Long Zheng and his colleagues from the Oz Dream Team took out the top prize this year with a system that's taking on the drought. SOAK (Smart Operational Agricultural Kit), a combination of hardware and software, is designed to assist drought stricken farmers manage their water resources effectively.

Knocking off some of the top university teams, traditionally mentored by senior academics, Oz Dream Team went it alone, worked largely online, had no previous farming experience, and stunned the judges with SOAK's sophistication, affordability and commercial development readiness. "It's not just conceptual, it's functional," said Mr Zheng.

Long will head to Paris this July to represent Australia in the Microsoft Imagine World Cup.

Business & Economics lecturer, Paul Sugden is headed for the WIPO Intellectual Property conference in Geneva

Business & Economics Lecturer Paul Sugden is one of five academics in the developed world selected to attend the Intellectual Property Colloquium in Geneva this July. Hosted by the World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO) and the World Trade Organisation (WTO), Mr Sugden will present two papers to the delegation, 'Intellectual Property is Visual: teaching non-lawyers intellectual property' and 'Catching the Marlin and the Minnows; commercial scale and the global harmonisation of criminal remedies for copyright infringement.'

Mr Sugden's selection is particularly impressive when considering the law academic once failed copyright class at university. An artist at heart and regular columnist for Textile Fibre Forum, his interest in IP was sparked as a way to protect creativity. The law school graduate returned to study his Masters in Intellectual Property Law. "It must be God's revenge for failing - you must do this forever!" Mr Sugden laughs. Now, a world leader in IP, Paul is looking forward to discussing the future of IP at the colloquium.
