PITSS- ‘Bringing in the Big Guns’

By Brent Moyle

PITSS is an informal group made up of postgraduate research students from the Tourism Research Unit (TRU) at the Monash Berwick campus. PITSS meets fortnightly to discuss issues and share information, generally keeping a low profile around the campus. Recently, however, visits by international researchers and representatives of key industry partners have led to a virtual PITSS fever hitting Berwick.

Dr Ann Hartl from Denmark’s CEUS School of Business presented to PITSS on selected dimensions of holiday imagery as viewed through tourists’ eyes.

A discussion on research ethics, covering issues such as misinterpretation, taking words out of context and the implications for authors and reviewers was led by Professor Sam Ham of the University of Idaho.

Dr Michael Lockwood, from the University of Tasmania, presented his view of the current issues and challenges for protected area researchers and practitioners. And PITSS gained a fascinating insight into a project on four-wheel drive outback tourists led by Dr Jim MacBeth ( Murdoch University, W.A.) and funded by the Desert Tourism Cooperative Research Centre.

Finally, Penny Middleton, the Visitor Research Officer from Parks Victoria, led a discussion aimed at strengthening the links between Parks Victoria and TRU.

PITSS plays a major role in hosting these researchers and industry representatives. In turn, tourism students and researchers at Monash Berwick are provided with the opportunity to engage with professionals who may otherwise be inaccessible to individual student researchers. The result is a strengthening relationship between Monash University and the wider tourism research community.
