Berwick academic wins award for research excellence

Monash Berwick lecturer and PhD Candidate, Pieter A Van Dijk (pictured right) was recently awarded the Vice-Chancellor's commendation for doctoral thesis excellence in 2006.

The thesis, entitled, Emotional Labour in a Tourism-Based Context: An Evaluation of the Emotional Labour, Emotional Dissonance and Burnout Sequence, focused on the performance of emotional labour in a tourism-based context.

Emotional labour is a work-related demand that requires customer service personnel to portray an organisationally appropriate form of emotional display, such as smiling in the right places, regardless of how they might actually feel. Emotional labour has been suggested to be difficult at times for workers when faking their emotional display possibly resulting in employee burnout.

Research findings suggested that faking emotional display could have a negative impact on employees when associated with feelings of discomfort.

"On behalf of Monash University Berwick I would like to congratulate Pieter on this wonderful achievement," said Pro Vice-Chancellor and Academic Director Professor Phillip Steele. "Pieter's award will help to highlight the excellence of researchers at the Berwick campus."

International Big Day Out a blast

As part of the recent O Week festivities over 300 International students, including 30 of our newest Berwick students, travelled on a convoy of buses to some of Victoria’s most picturesque coastal spots.

After taking in the sights of Arthur’s Seat and Sorrento, the group boarded the ferry to Queenscliff for lunch. A stroll along the Geelong foreshore was followed by a dinner and bush dance at the Caulfield campus.

“We all thoroughly enjoyed this trip around the bay and a chance to meet many of the newly enrolled International students,” said Campus Chaplain, Glenda Mattingley a guest on the trip.

The international Big Day Out was definitely a blast. Check the Berwick International Students Association for more information on other events for international students at Berwick.
