Berwick academic wins award for research excellence
Monash Berwick lecturer and PhD Candidate, Pieter A Van Dijk (pictured right) was recently awarded the Vice-Chancellor's
commendation for doctoral thesis excellence in 2006.
The thesis, entitled, Emotional Labour in a Tourism-Based Context: An Evaluation of the Emotional Labour, Emotional Dissonance and Burnout Sequence, focused on the performance of emotional labour in a tourism-based context.
Emotional labour is a work-related demand that requires customer service personnel to portray an organisationally appropriate form of emotional display, such as smiling in the right places, regardless of how they might actually feel. Emotional labour has been suggested to be difficult at times for workers when faking their emotional display possibly resulting in employee burnout.
Research findings suggested that faking emotional display could have a negative impact on employees when associated with feelings of discomfort.
"On behalf of Monash University Berwick I would like to congratulate Pieter on this wonderful achievement," said Pro Vice-Chancellor and Academic Director Professor Phillip Steele. "Pieter's award will help to highlight the excellence of researchers at the Berwick campus."
