Monash University and Kambrya College click for charity photo competition

Monash University Berwick will play host to a charity photographic competition/exhibition organised by two local Year 11 Kambrya College Business Management students.

Meg Christie and Dee Butcher (pictured above) are the brains behind Virata, (the Hindu word for courage) a photographic competition aimed at students from local secondary schools in Years 9-12. The students devised the competition to raise money for the “Kids with Cameras” charity; an organisation devoted to teaching photographic skills to poverty-stricken children.

“We are delighted to be involved in such a positive project that engages with students from the local area and helps to build a brighter future for other young people,” said Pro Vice-Chancellor and Academic Director Professor Phillip Steele.

“Meg and Dee should be commended for their commitment to helping others. I would also like to thank Matthew Sheedy from Sheedy-Muir’s The Good Guys in Narre Warren for donating the major prize.”

The winner of Virata will receive a Brother Multi-Function printer and minor prizes will include Coles Myer gift vouchers.

All local secondary students from Years 9-12 are encouraged to take a photo of something that they love, something or someone that gives them courage or something that inspires them. Entries close on Monday 15 th October.

Competition entries will be exhibited at Monash University’s Berwick campus from the 22 nd - 26 th of October, with the major event to name the winner taking place on Thursday 25 th October from 5.30pm – 6.45pm.

Members of the public are welcome to attend and it will be possible to vote for the best photo throughout the week of the exhibition.

“Virata is a fantastic initiative for young people from our local area to help other young people,” said Professor Steele. “Please show your support by voting for your favourite photo with a gold coin.”

Monash Berwick helps local Year 12s prepare for their exams

Monash University in collaboration with the South East Education Forum received over 680 registrations to their end-of-year VCE Revision Lecture series, which recently took place at Monash University’s Berwick campus on October 6th and 7th.

VCE teachers from schools in the area delivered the two-hour lectures, covering subjects such as English, Maths, Biology, Psychology, Physics, Chemistry and Accounting.

The lectures helped prepare Year 12 students for their upcoming end-of-year exams without having to travel too far from home.

“Monash University Berwick is proud to host the VCE Revision Lectures for students from the local region,” said Pro Vice-Chancellor and Academic Director Professor Phillip Steele.

“The time and costs associated with travelling to similar events in Melbourne can pose a barrier for many local students. We are thrilled to be able to provide both a high quality and reasonably priced local alternative.”

“Students from the South-East should be provided with the same opportunities to excel as students from other areas of Melbourne. Monash University Berwick is honoured to be able to assist local students to be their best.”

The next VCE Revision Lecture Series will take place in May 2008.

Interested students can find out more by speaking to their school’s Careers Counsellor or by calling Monash University on 9904 7003.
