Cultures unite for Multicultural Week at Monash Berwick

Monash University Berwick celebrated the rich mixture of cultures present on campus during its annual Multicultural Week which ran from August 20 th – 24th 2007. With one third of its students from
overseas, Monash Berwick offers both domestic and international students a rewarding cultural experience during their time studying at the campus.

Multicultural Week, organised by the Berwick International Students Association (BISA) included five days of cultural activities including Belly dancing, Bhangra dancing, African steel drumming, cooking demonstrations and Bollywood dancing. Students, staff and the local community are welcome to attend.

“I’m really proud of the variety of cultural events that we have planned for Multicultural Week at Monash University’s Berwick campus,” said Non Adun President of the Berwick International Students Association pictured above (left) with fellow international students Dedi Sumantri Abdul Hamid (middle) and Shermaine Chia (right).

“This vast array of activities is a true reflection of the many different cultures that are present on campus.”

The highlight of the weeklong event was a costume competition where entrants wore their national dress. The competition was definitely the most colourful event of the week.

“Multicultural Week celebrates the unique experience that we can offer at Monash Berwick,” said Ms Adun.

“Both domestic and international students are given the opportunity to learn about other’s cultures and an event such as this provides students with the chance to form friendships that transcend geographical boundaries.”
