Local high achievers attend High Fives

Local high-achieving Year 11 students gathered recently at Monash University’s Berwick campus as part of the High Fives program developed by the South-East Education Forum.

High Fives brings together students attending schools in the South-East of Melbourne.

Nominated students have the potential to achieve at a high level and are keen to meet and mix with other very bright students in the region. The aim of the program is to boost students’ motivation to do their best by experiencing the challenge of a university environment.

“We were proud to play host to the top Year 11 students from schools such as Berwick Secondary College, Cranbourne Secondary College, Kambrya College and St Francis-Xavier College as part of the High Fives program,” said Pro Vice-Chancellor and Academic Director Professor Phillip Steele.

Academic Glen Croy (pictured above) from Monash University Berwick’s own Tourism Research Unit (TRU) delivered a mini-lecture entitled, “Film induced tourism and the impacts on local communities.” Participants then broke into groups to discuss the positive and negative impacts posed if Hollywood producers were to shoot a blockbuster in the Berwick area.

“Students participating in the High Fives program have provided extremely positive feedback,” said Pro Vice-Chancellor and Academic Director Professor Phillip Steele.

“Monash University Berwick is honoured to be able to provide local students with the opportunity to meet other high achievers in the area so that they can develop their academic potential together.”

The next High Fives sessions are planned for August 28 and 29 2007. The program was recently awarded a funding grant from the City of Casey Schools in the area are invited to register their interest in the program by contacting Karen Petersen, Campus Marketing Manager on 9904 7005 or karen.petersen@adm.monash.edu.au.
