Sarah wins Herb Thomas Memorial Trust award

Monash Berwick Communication Honours student Sarah Gorman was recently awarded the Herb Thomas Memorial Trust Award by the Rotary Club of Pakenham, and the City of Casey.

The award perpetuates the memory of the late Herb Thomas who was the proprietor and editor of the Pakenham Gazette.

Sarah received a certificate and a $1200 cheque for being the most outstanding journalism student at Monash University, Berwick.

"I was really surprised and honoured to receive the award," Sarah said. "I was flattered just to be nominated, so winning was awesome."

Sarah plans to use her prize to fund a trip to London next year to further her writing aspirations.

"My goal is to work in magazine publishing, but I would like to gain experience as a journalist in other media too," she said.

Sarah commends the Herb Thomas Memorial Trust for supporting creative industries and for providing her with a competitive edge.

NAIDOC celebrations at Monash Berwick

Monash University will officially celebrate NAIDOC Week during the first week of semester two, July 16th - 20th 2007.

NAIDOC celebrations are held around Australia in July to celebrate the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.

NAIDOC originally stood for ‘National Aborigines and Islanders Day Observance Committee’. This committee was once responsible for organising national activities during NAIDOC Week and its acronym has become the name of the week itself.

The week is celebrated not just in the Indigenous community, but also in increasing numbers of government agencies, schools, local councils and workplaces.

The Berwick campus wil mark the occasion with a didgeridoo concert in the foyer of building 901 on Tuesday 17th July from 1pm - 2pm.

There will also be a special free lunchtime screening of the film, Rabbit Proof Fence from 12pm-2pm on Thursday 19th July in lecture theatre G.43 in building 901.
