Cultural tourism experts visits TRU

The Tourism Research Unit (TRU) last week was host to Adelaide-based Associate Professor Jane James, a well-known Australian expert in cultural tourism and heritage interpretation.

Dr James, who is Head of Cultural Tourism at Flinders University, gave an overview of the Australian National Heritage and Tourism Thematic Interpretation Framework, which she developed as an output of a research consultancy project funded by the Australian Department of the Environment and Heritage.

She demonstrated how the framework was used to construct interpretive themes and stories from a national through to a site level for the Naracoorte Caves World Heritage Site.

Dr James said that providing information to visitors within such a structure helped visitors connect with the site they were visiting, as well as make connections to places they had already been and places they are thinking of visiting.

She showed that such an approach to visitor communication enhances the visitor experience and increases the chances that each experience is not only enjoyable, but also memorable and meaningful.

Multicultural Day at Berwick

The diverse and multicultural student population at Berwick was celebrated last week on Multicultural Day.

International flags welcomed visitors as they walked through the foyer to the Student Lounge, where most of the action took place.

After feasting on anything from curries to coconut jellied desserts, sushi and party pies, the crowd turned its attention to the music and events taking place on the stage.

Audience participation was the name of the game, with opportunities to applaud the best national costume, enter the Sack Race or take part in the Guess-the-Flag competition. There was even a cricket match.

President of the Berwick International Student Association Andrea Zhang said the day was an opportunity to bring together and showcase the different cultures on campus.

“We’re introducing the Berwick community using festive celebration as a backdrop,” she said.
