Architectural awards in the south east

Architectural excellence in Melbourne’s south east region was celebrated at a gala dinner held recently at the Beaconsfield Community Complex, itself the winner of the Best Public Project in 2005.

The awards were conducted by South East Development (Melbourne) ACC to recognise the contribution that design excellence brings to the quality of life experienced by local residents and visitors to Melbourne’s south east.

Projects eligible for this year’s awards related to recently designed structures and landscapes located in six south east municipalities including the Shire of Cardinia and City of Casey. The judging panel included some of Australia’s best credentialed architectural experts.

Monash University sponsored the Best Building Conversion Award which this year was won by architect Wendy Hastrich for her imaginative re-working of a ‘mediocre shed’ into a vibrant public building.

Pro Vice-Chancellor and Academic Director for Berwick Professor Phillip Steele congratulates Stuart Castle representing winning architect Wendy Hastrich.

Herb Thomas Award to Berwick Journalism student

Journalism graduate and now PhD student Marc McGowan (pictured) will receive the 2006 Herb Thomas Memorial Trust Award on Thursday night at a special presentation dinner hosted by the Rotary Club of Berwick.

The award is given annually by the Trust to the most outstanding final year Journalism Studies student in the Bachelor of Communications degree at Monash Berwick. Joanna Krupski was also nominated for the Award and will receive a Certificate of Nomination.

On behalf of the Trust, Assistant Secretary Ms Megan Rainey said that both nominees were of an extremely high standard and certainly a credit to our institution. The panel comprised Chairman Roger Hall and Trustees Gary Board, Gary Evans and Mike Tyler.

World’s Greatest Shave

Sixteen students and three Berwick lecturers had their hair shaved or coloured and are now sporting a whole new look around campus.

The World’s Greatest Shave was organized by Monash Union of Berwick Students (MUBS) on 18 May and raised $450 for the Leukaemia Foundation.

Vice-president of MUBS Junayed Chowdhury helped raise money for the Leukaemia Foundation.

VCE revision lectures on campus

About 150 VCE students from local secondary schools came to the Berwick campus last Sunday for five two-hour VCE revision lectures conducted by selected VCE teachers. The lectures in Biology, Psychology, Physics, Chemistry and Accounting gave students advice on how to handle the Unit 3 VCE examinations in early June.

This is the second year the lectures have been held at Monash Berwick and student feedback was again very positive. The lectures are a not-for-profit series conducted on behalf of the South East Education Forum and organised by the Campus Manager’s office. VCE revision lectures on Unit 4 subjects will be held at the Berwick campus on Saturday 14th and Sunday 15th October.
