News

Library and Learning Commons opened

Senior Deputy Vice-Chancellor Professor Stephen Parker officially opened the Library and Learning Commons on the Berwick campus last week. He thanked Pro Vice-Chancellor and Academic Director Professor Phillip Steele and Berwick staff for volunteering to be the first campus of Monash University to develop a learning commons. He noted that this style of facility is recognised as being best practice in the delivery of services to students in the higher education sector. Professor Steele congratulated the many staff involved in funding and planning the project and then seeing it through to completion. About 60 Monash staff attended the opening. External guests included six IT coordinators or librarians from local secondary schools and two representatives from the architects Woods Bagot.

New international students lounge

International students celebrated their new lounge last week with a special international food day. President of the Berwick International Students Association (BISA) Andrea Zhang (pictured) said the lounge was a great place for international students to meet others and to feel at home on the Berwick campus. The new lounge is next to the bookshop on the ground floor of 902.

Comings and goings

Marketing growing at Berwick

The coordinator of the department of Marketing at Berwick Mike Willis reports that the department now has seven full-time staff on campus, with an eighth staff member about to arrive from Hong Kong City University. "He’s a real catch for our campus," Mike said. "We will also advertise for an aspro (again) soon, and all of this is a real change from the days when we seemed to have just too few staff! We also now have two PhD students at Berwick in Marketing, and this too is a sign of the consolidation of the department on this campus."

Farewell to Facilities and Services head office

The Divisional Director’s Office of Facilities and Services will be relocating from Berwick to the Clayton campus next weekend. All Berwick staff are invited for a drink to farewell Stephen Davey, Diana Bracegirdle, Chris Flynn, Jill McLachlan, Brian Treloar and Laurie Cuttiford, in Room 203, Building 901 this Thursday 17th May from 4.30pm.

The campus office of Facilities and Services will remain at Berwick.

Opportunities

Interested in the environment?

Emeritus Professor Peter Fitzroy in the Faculty of Business and Economics has asked Betty Weiler to find out if anyone at the Berwick campus has an interest and willingness to serve on an advisory board to the Western Port Seagrass Partnership.  The partnership is fully independent of government and has a strong community base. It was established for efforts to understand, protect and restore the ecosystems of Western port and its seagrass communities.

The Chairman of the Board, Roger James, would be delighted to hear from anyone at Monash Berwick who would like to contribute on a volunteer basis. If you are interested or know someone who might like to take on this role, please phone Betty Weiler’s office on extn 47104 for the contact details.

Notices

Virtual Librarian under review

Most of the online tutorials available from the site formerly known as the Virtual Librarian are no longer being updated while a usability study is conducted.

However, two of the most popular online tutorials continue to be currently available:

  • Citing and Referencing
  • How to use EndNote 9 (a bibliographic management tool)
  • Subject Guides available for students

Online subject guides bring together a range of relevant library subscribed and other resources for a specific subject. Students will find these useful for locating information for their assignments.
