STAFF PRE COMMONWEALTH GAMES

September 19 2005 was a red-letter day for Berwick Campus when nearly 60 members of the academic and general staff met in fierce competition at the Inaugural Staff Games. The Games started with a rousing address by Marlene Mannays, who then handed over to Lindsay Smith, MC for the historic event (picked for his ability to project his voice commandingly – just in case the megaphone did not turn up in time)

First Relay was the Egg (grateful thanks to Jenny Dodds’ prolific chooks) and Spoon (generously on loan from the café) with seven teams battling it out. From the first moment, this event was marked by the shocking exploits of a group of academics, about which the less said the better, determined to win at all costs. This set the pattern of competition for the day with the fair-minded and foul, battling for ascendancy, with much hilarity, loud screeching, accusations and retaliations.

Highlights included:
An unforgettable, brilliant blue, Marge Simpson hairdo on Liz Turner and a fantastic snake outfit on Judy Robertson. A group of Pink Ladies from Business, with great team spirit and amazing outfits (also selected by Vandhinak to receive prestigious Fashions in the Field Award)

High-jinks over the Balloon Relay, with much popping (not always accidental); an impressive, keenly competitive Facilities’ team, distinguished by Diana’s brilliant Gumboot Throw, Robert Klein’s sartorial elegance and the uncertain skills of their bold yellow, pom-pom shaking all-male cheer squad.

Tunnel Ball, with Sandra Laurence (Buseco) and Megan O’Brien (Arts) expertly organising a motley rabble of over-excited grown-up kids into two reasonably straight, effective teams. Megan’s group took out the Trophy (on display at the Arts counter for all to see), while Sandra’s got (faulty) blow-out paper whistles.

The point of the Games was gloriously achieved as there seemed to be lots of cross- faculty and department fraternising and friendly teasing and every area of campus was represented. Thanks to Marlene for funding, to Eddie for managing the Gumboot Throwers, to Faculty and Department team organizers, to prize givers and to all who came and made these Games possible at short notice at a very busy time.

Rhondda Curtis
