EQUAL OPPORTUNITY – TRAINING AT BERWICK

The Equity and Diversity Centre is providing the following training at Berwick:

What: Equal Opportunity: What you need to know
When: Wednesday 31 August, from 10am - 1:00 pm
Where: Tutorial Room 1140

Aims: To inform staff and students of their rights and responsibilities under Australian equal opportunity legislation and to explain the University's policies and procedures. The implications for Monash of the Disability Discrimination Act will be explored in detail.

Outcomes: For participants to understand the complex nature of equal opportunity issues, how discrimination, sexual harassment and vilification may be experienced and how best to respond when difficulties arise. The need for confidentiality, the importance of ensuring natural justice and the challenges of dealing with conflict will be specific foci of the training.

SMART PROGRAM

Andrew Marks and Rhondda Curtis, our campus Counsellors, will again be offering the SMART program this semester. This is designed to assist any student having difficulties with study issues and covers Strategies for Success, Motivation, Attitude, Stress Reduction and Time Management. The program will run over four days

NEW STAFF AT BERWICK

Dr Mindi Nath is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Econometrics and Business Statistics. She is the Monash Graduate Research School's nominated statistical consultant for Masters and PhD students at the Berwick and the Gippsland campuses. She has the experience of teaching graduate and undergraduate courses in forecasting and statistics. Prior to joining at the Berwick campus, she was the Deputy Course Director for Bachelor of Business and Commerce degree at Gippsland Campus. Her research interests include: Maximum likelihood estimation using simulation, Modeling of Markovian systems and Modeling and forecasting volatility of share market stock prices

Dr Jill Wright has a doctorate in mathematical physics from the University of London. She researched and taught in that area for a number of years, in Canada and the USA as well as in Australia. Dr Wright has coauthored a book on quantum field theory. She moved into econometrics several years ago. She is currently involved in a project funded by the Consumer Credit Fund on financial constraint in the Gippsland region. Her research interests now include financial econometrics and income distributions.

Dr Jaai Parasnis , PhD (Monash) MAppEco (Hons) Griffith. Dr Parasnis joined the Department of Economics in 2005 after completing her Phd at Monash. She is interested in the areas of international economics and labour economics and her research focuses on immigration, especially in Australian context. Dr Jaai is currently teaching ECC3690 - International Economics at Clayton, ECW 3301- Case Studies in International Economics at Peninsula and assisting with ECW 2141- Labour Economics at Berwick.

Dr Ruvendra Nandan joined Monash University’s Berwick campus at the beginning of semester two, 2005. He is a Senior Lecturer in Accounting. His teaching and research interests are in the area of accounting for management control. Prior to joining Monash University, Ruvendra was a senior lecturer and Convenor for the Discipline of Accounting at James Cook University in Cairns. His other academic appointments were at the University of the South Pacific and the Fiji Institute of Technology. Ruvendra is located in Room 130F and can be contacted on 47088



BERWICK MULTICULTURAL DAY 2005

The Berwick multicultural day was held on Wednesday 10 August from 12 noon till 4pm. The afternoon consisted of performances and dances by students and professionals

There was an array of delicious international food to tuck into as well as prizes for various competitions. The event was organised by BISA (Berwick International Student Association) in conjunction with MUBS.




ELECTION FOR STUDENT MEMBERS OF COUNCIL & ACADEMIC BOARD

Elections for student members of Council and Academic Board will take place shortly.

The elections are for:

  • One undergraduate or diploma student member and one graduate student member of the University Council and
  • Four undergraduate or diploma student members and two graduate student members of the Academic Board.

Please forward nomination forms to Mrs Marlene Mannays (Assistant Returning Officer) by 12 noon on Monday 5 September 2005.
