Welcome to Berwick campus
Welcome back (if you’re a returning student or staff) or welcome (if this is your first semester at Berwick).
The MUBS office bearers, the academic staff and the administrative and support services staff have been back at work for some time preparing for what we hope will be another year of progress at the Berwick Campus.
We trust that students and staff new to the Campus will, with a little help from the “old hands”, settle in quickly and make the most of what we think is a friendly campus.
We look forward to you making the most of the very new and modern facilities and to you enjoying all aspects of the Berwick Campus. If you are not happy with any aspect of Campus life please let us know.

Library news
Welcome new students. Have a look at the library’s welcome page at
http://www.lib.monash.edu.au/news/2005/02-newstudents.html it contains all the information you need to get you started!
Returning students – come and collect a What’s new 2005 leaflet from the library loans/information desk. It highlights all the changes that have occurred in the library since last year. There are quite a few!
The biggest change is that we have replaced inter-campus loans and recalls done through the library catalogue with HOLDS. The catalogue page provides details of what to do now. Check it out at http://library.monash.edu.au
We also have a new electronic notice board! Daily messages will be posted. Let us know what you think.
Don’t forget next week we are open normal semester hours from 8.30am – 6pm Monday to Friday and weekends from
1-5pm. Come and get a calendar, which details our hours for the whole year, from the loans/information desk.
Student Survival Week
Look out for Student Survival Week commencing Monday 21 March. Student Survival Week provides you with answers to all those questions you may have after experiencing your first few weeks of university life. Seek out tips and advice from current staff and students on healthy living, cheap living, international assistance, life on-campus, have I done the right thing (coming to uni?), exam tips and how to manage study workload. Lots of freebies and food so come along!

Green Office Program
Current Tip: Reduce Paper Use
In 2003, Monash University purchased 206,000 reams of paper, 10% more than purchased in 2002. This amount required the felling of over 8700 trees, and the paper purchased by Monash OFFICES alone cost over 1/2 million dollars.
Despite increased paper recycling Monash is still purchasing too much paper, with negative environmental and economic consequences.
Below are some ridiculously easy ways to reduce the amount of paper you use in the office...
Avoid printing out e-mails unless absolutely necessary.
Adjust your margins and type size to fit more on the page.
Use:
Arial font,
11 point type,
2.54 cm (1 inch) left hand margins and,
1.27 cm (0.5 inch) right hand margins
This increases the amount of information you can fit on a page by up to a third and still does not make the page look too crowded.
Print and photocopy double-sided
For all drafts or internal documents use the manual feeder of photocopiers and printers, and feed in once-used paper
Print two pages per sheet whenever possible (check out the 'Print' screen, look under the 'Zoom' heading and type '2' pages per sheet).
Use the Print Preview function to check layout and style instead of/and before printing.

Top supervision award for tourism professor
 |
Graduate research students have awarded Professor Betty Weiler the Monash Postgraduate Association’s prestigious Supervisor of the Year Award.
MPA president Bhanuka Wanasinghe presented the award to Professor Weiler, at a ceremony at the Berwick campus.
Several of Professor Weiler’s graduate research students collaborated to submit an application to the MPA, outlining her excellence in research supervision and the inspiration and support she provided them in 2004 as their supervisor.
“The research environment that Betty has created at the Berwick’s Tourism Research Unit is supportive, energetic, friendly and inspiring.
“Betty always makes you feel that you are a priority. Given her countless other commitments, this is a remarkable achievement,” said tourism PhD candidate Mr Jim Curtis.
Professor Weiler, a distinguished academic in the tourism area, heads Monash’s Tourism Research Unit, serves on the editorial board of five international journals and is supervisor to 1 DBA and 6 PhD candidates. |
