Berwick Multimedia Student is Part of Winning Microsoft Imagine Cup Team

Imagine a world where technology enables a sustainable future. This was the challenge set for participants in the 2008 Microsoft Imagine Cup. Regarded by many as the IT equivalent of Australian Idol, students are given a chance to showcase their talent and get a kick-start into the industry.

Berwick multimedia student Long Zheng and his colleagues from the Oz Dream Team took out the top prize this year with a system that's taking on the drought. SOAK (Smart Operational Agricultural Kit), a combination of hardware and software, is designed to assist drought stricken farmers manage their water resources effectively.

Knocking off some of the top university teams, traditionally mentored by senior academics, Oz Dream Team went it alone, worked largely online, had no previous farming experience, and stunned the judges with SOAK's sophistication, affordability and commercial development readiness. "It's not just conceptual, it's functional," said Mr Zheng.

Long will head to Paris this July to represent Australia in the Microsoft Imagine World Cup.

International Students Farewell Berwick as they Prepare to Graduate

It was a scene straight from a movie. Eighteen proud students in academic dress assembled on the lawn of the Berwick campus and prepared for their graduation photo. They fussed with their caps and rearranged their gowns while proud family and friends watched on.

The campus farewelled it's graduating international students with a party and photoshoot during semester break. Hosted by Health, Wellbeing and Development, the event gave students a chance to mark their academic success with their peers before leaving Australia.

"Today means a lot to me. I'm going home to work in Singapore so it's nice to have this day to reflect with my friends," said Bachelor of Business and Commerce graduate, Kiat Sen Francis Jauw.

Budding fashion magazine editor, Huey Miin Yeo will stay in Australia to travel and graduate with her class mates in September. " I came to Berwick from the Malaysian campus for the experience. It's small, friendly and the lecturers are very approachable. It's sad that I've come to the end of my journey at uni," Ms Huey said.

Most students will graduate formally in in their home countries later in the year.
