Faculty of Arts : Bachelor of Communication/Bachelor of Information Technology and Systems

The course of study for a double degree or a double award is normally four years full-time.  Students must complete the following requirements.

For the Bachelor of Communication:

Communication major

The range of subjects offered is designed to equip students with specialised but flexible skills in describing and analysing the organisation, the processes and the diverse uses and effects of 'traditional' and 'new' mass communication technologies.  Students are expected to develop an understanding of the practical operation of these media as well as the social and cultural dimensions of mediated communication considering the audiences, producers and policy-makers involved.

Students must complete the first-year level units

and six of the following
COM2000/3000 Media modernities and the everyday
COM2020/3020 Second media age
COM2050/3050 New media: Communications in the electronic age
COM2080/3080 Youth media
COM2100/3100 The public sphere
COM2417/3417 Virtual cultures: Sex, politics and war in cyberspace
COM2550/3550 Eyewitness: Reportage, representation and war
COM3090 Media, violence, protest, terror

Arts sequence

The Bachelor of Communication at Berwick is designed to enable students to undertake a range of units in the Faculty of Arts that complement the specialist knowledge of communication industries and practices they gain in the communication degree.

Students are required to complete two core film and television units and a minor sequence (two 1st year and two 2nd year level units from the same discipline) in an arts discipline.

the following arts sequences are offered the Berwick campus, however students who wish to undertaken an arts sequence on other campuses of the university may be permitted to do so.

  • Psychology (1st-year level only)
  • Film and Television

Second degree or award - Bachelor of Information Technology and Systems

Students are required to compete 7 core Information Technology units and a major in multimedia.  Multimedia systems and products combine different media - words, images, film, sound and animation into an interactive package that presents information in a variety of forms and allows people to use it in a way that best suits them.  Multimedia systems include Internet sites, electronic commerce, information booths, educational software, games and advertising services.
